When to Change Blade on Your Safety Razor

Safety razors are the next generation shaving tools because of their advance mechanics and design. They are known for their characteristic sharpness and durability but this doesn't give the blades longevity. Just like other kinds of blade, the safety razor becomes blunt over time. For this reason, blades are required to be changed occasionally. Some products like the Vikings Blade come with 5 extra blades to give users an uninterrupted shaving experience. There's no fixed time on when blades should be changed but factors such as these will help you out.

Thickness of the Hair

The thickness and coarseness of hair plays an important role in the service life of a safety razor blade. The thicker the hair, the greater the force required by the blade to cut the hair. While the original sharpness of the blade is not in doubt, the blade becomes dull quicker when subjected to that amount of pressure all the time.

Age of the Blade

An average safety razor has blades with service life of about 2 to 3 days. Quality safety products like the Vikings Blade have service life of about 5 to 7 days. This factor would also tell on the nearness of bluntness of the blade.

Frequency of Shaving

How often you take a shave will also affect the overall sharpness of the blade. For people with daily shaving, the blades will get blunted more easily than someone using a safety razor every 2 to 3 days.

Making Good Lather with Shaving Soaps

Shaving soaps are not the same as shaving creams but they often get interchanged. This is usually because they provide the same function of providing lather but they are different in several ways. When using wet shaving, it is best to use a badger brush for application. Before using your Vikings Blade, here's how to make a good shaving soap.
  •  Place your badger brush in warm water for about a minute. The longer it stays in the water, the better. This allows the brush bristles to absorb enough water.
  •  Remove the brush from the water and shake off gently. Do it gently to avoid displacing all of its absorbed water content.
  •  With circular strokes, use the brush to touch the surface of the shaving soap. With the absorbed wetness of the brush, the soap can easily attach to it.
  •  When you've been able to get enough thick clump of soap on the brush, paste it in the scuttle. Repeat this in circular strokes until you have enough soap paste in the scuttle.
  •  To get more lather, add few drops to the scuttle and keep mixing in a circular motion. When you start noticing bubbles, it means the water added is in excess. Try and even out the mixture by using the brush to add soap.
  • Once the cream is made, apply to the face in a circular motion. This helps thicken and spread the shaving soap on the face.

How to Shave Your Head

There are different hairstyles and even more variations of each hairstyle. Some men like to keep their hairs long, others love it short. Then there are those who would rather shave it off. So if you are considering shaving it off or looking to learn the techniques involved, then you're just in luck!

First thing you would want to do is to make sure the hair on your head is short - usually a few millimeters is fine. You can use hair clippers to bring it this low if it's longer. Assuming your hair is already short, you would need to take a shower. This would keep the hair moist and soften them a bit.

Once you get out of the shower, use a good shaving cream to lather up the entire head. You should be able to achieve this with your hands. If you're having difficulties, use a badger brush.

Ideally, a good safety razor like Vikings Blade is sharper and can give closer shaves. The sharpness of these kinds of razors would mean you understand the angle positioning to prevent injuring yourself. Anyways, you would want to start from the front and work yourself to the back of the head. At first, you may need to add more lather to do a perfect job. With time, as you get familiar with it, you can do it with lather at once.

Know Your Shaving Brush & Why It is Important to Do So

The shaving brush has its application in wet shaving. If you are new to shaving or just about venturing into the world of wet shaving, the shaving brush is a major player in this league. When you think of a shaving brush, think of it as a sidekick to the heroic safety razor. Even for men that have been wet shaving for years, some of them still don’t know the importance of the shaving brush.

This understanding can only start from examining and appreciating the design detail of the shaving brush. Three important things in a shaving brush are the knot, handle, and loft. The knot of the brush is the diameter of the brush base. For beginners, a 24mm knot size is appropriate. This diameter will ensure enough precision and spread of the shaving cream. Smaller knot size increases precision but won’t be able to carry up enough lather at once. This means you have to lather up severally. Getting a balance is ideal for the knot size.

The loft is basically the height of the brush bristles. Simply put, the distance from the brush tip to the knot base is the loft. The loft does more than just applying the shaving cream, it also acts as a pre-exfoliation agent by removing leftover dirt, dead skin, and oil from your skin before shaving. So a brush with shorter loft and average knot base will give you more control in exfoliating the skin and applying the cream.

How Many Blades Do You Use to Shave?

As strange as this may seem, these are questions that some men ask just to make sure they're on the right track. If you shave daily or own an expensive razor, a question on how to reduce the number of blades would have crossed your mind severally. So 1, 2, 3, or 4, what is the ideal number to use per shave? There's absolutely no straight answer to this. It depends on several factors like the thickness or coarseness of the hair, type of razor, sharpness, and so on.

A good, sharp blade should be able to take care of all your stubble in one use. Most of today's brands even go as far as including extra blades because they want their customers to have a good shaving experience. A good example of such product is the Vikings Blade. Depending on the coarseness of the hair, a razor blade can be used up to 7 times before it becomes dull. If your blades get dull affect one use, there's no need keeping it for another. Dispose of it and replace with a sharper blade. If you are a heavy shaver and use lots of blades, you may want to consider switching to an inexpensive razor like the Vikings Blade.

Vikings Blade vs Seki Edge Feather DE Razor

TheVikings Blade is a recent product that has taken the North American market by storm. It has enjoyed quite a lot of reviews both online and offline. The Seki Edge is yet another brand that is still on the rise. The Seki Edge Feather is the brand’s top product and it is quite easy to see why.

Design
The Vikings is simply beautiful; there is just no other subtle way to put it. It is made from super strong materials from Sweden and has an aesthetical appeal to it. In appearance it has a shiny, reflective chrome plating finishing. The Seki Edge Feather is yet another beautiful razor. It is made from a heavy stainless steel material and gives it just the right weight for a good razor.

Accessories
The Vikings Blade comes with 5 unbranded blades and also a travel case. The travel case comes with a mirror inside to allow for shaving at any time. The Seki Edge Feather does not come with any blades or a travel case. These additional accessories would have to be bought alongside the main product.

Unique Feature

What sets the Vikings Blade apart from most of the rest double edge razors is its advanced butterfly head feature. The head not only allows for blade changes in 5 seconds, it also comes fitted with a micro-comb that prevents cuts during shave.

The Aggressiveness of a Double Edge Razor

The best way to describe what aggressiveness is all about is to link it to how a razor feels on your skin when shaving. The word has had many razor users confused as they do not know if aggressiveness is a good or bad thing. When it comes to aggressiveness, it's neither a good or bad thing but more so an individual preference. There are people that prefer mild aggressive razors to heavily aggressive once. To better understand it, blades will be discussed as mild aggressive, medium aggressive, and aggressive.

Mild Aggressive

The mildness of a razor is as a result of the design of the blades in relation to the razor itself. Such razors usually have a smaller blade gap that exposes a small part of the double edge razor. The safety bar also has a wider angle to ensure minimal contact with the skin. With this design, the possibility of cuts and irritation is greatly reduced. This makes such blades an ideal choice for people with sensitive skin or beginners. This type of blade will not be effective for thick beards. To get a good shave, the user would have to work a particular area several times. Not only is this frustrating, it may start to tug on the hair over time.

Medium Aggressive

In this type of blades, the blade gap is fairly on the average and exposes edged good part of the double edge blade. The safety bar is of normal standard and this blade is the balance point between mild aggressive and aggressive blades. The Vikings Blade falls under this category and with its imbedded micro-comb feature, accidental cuts are eliminated.

Aggressive

In this type of blade, the gap is very large and exposes a greater part of the blade. This allows for more hair to get into the gap and ensure better shaves. The only issue with this type of blade is that it could cause irritations and cuts if not properly used.

The Vikings Blade Started Off As A Gift Item...

On my birthday last year, my girlfriend decided to buy me the VikingsBlade Safety Razor among other gift items. At the time, I was using one of Feather's double edge razors. I have always been lucky with razors as I do not have a sensitive skin or coarse hair. I started using the Vikings Blade the next day and fell totally in love with it.

The product is not aggressive and is very gentle on my skin. Although my hair is not naturally coarse, it still doesn't pull on the hair. It is quite hefty like my previous Feather and allows for a closer and better shave. It's a bit shorter than my previous razor but I don't really have a problem with it. Blade change is another amazing thing about it. Whoever brought up the idea for a butterfly head needs to be commended! Unless you've used a razor with a butterfly head, it's impossible for you to truly understand. In all, I would definitely recommend this to any man still in doubt.

Vikings Blade Safety Razor Review

So I got the much talked about Vikings Blade sometime last month and was really anxious to test it out. I'll do a better review after using it for like 6 months but I need to do this one real quick. First thing first, everything you've heard about the product is true. I'm not even going to bother asking what exactly you heard. So I'll start with the packaging. It's came in a really simple package; nothing really out of the ordinary.

Unboxing it, you'll see the travel case and the 5 extra blades along with the product. I didn't waste much time in testing it because I hadn't shaved that morning. The butterfly head is amazing, especially in changing the blades. My previous razor was a TTO, so you know where I am coming from. The razor is not too aggressive and I would recommend it for any beginner. Shave was even and smooth and left not bruises or cuts. The handle is short and I think that pushes the head closer to the skin for a better shave. All in all, shaving with the Vikings Blade is a beautiful experience. Like I said, I'll do a comprehensive review to see how well and far the product can last.

Merkur "Futur" Safety Razor Review - Decide What You Mean By "Adjustable" Before You Buy

The Futur on its lowest setting exposes more blade than the Progess does on its highest setting. For classic Gillette adjustable owners, setting 9 of 9 on the Fatboy or Slim is roughly the same as setting 2 of 6 on the Futur. Plus the Futur is immensely heavy, about 25% heavier than a Progess or a Fatboy. This adds up to a mighty aggressive shaver!

In my particular case, I can only use the least sharp blades in the Futur (aka Derby & Merkur) at the lowest possible setting (1 of 6). If I use some sharper blade (Personna Blue, Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellows, or even an Astra SP) or dare to crank the dial up to 2 of 6, aaargggh! Lobster face, razor burn for hours, even without any blood. So I can use 1 or 2 types of blades in this, and on only 1 of 6 settings. (There are half point settings as well, but even 1.5 is gap too far for me...) To me, this is not really an adjustable, as I always have to use the same setting and only certain types of blades, unless I want to rip my face off.

Lest you think me unmanly or inexpert, I will say I have used razors that are heavy (Maggard MR8) and some that are known for having aggressive heads (Parker 92R, Weber PH) and I can get smooth skin and a non-lobster face using those razors with all sorts of blades. It's only the Futur that causes me red-faced grief. Of course, in the wet shaving world, we have our flint-bearded Vikings, who have metallic stubble and shave once every several days. If you are one of these types, this may be your razor and maybe you can enjoy different blades and settings.

I like the adjustable concept as it gives users a lot of customization options and the ability to mix exposure up during different shave passes. Most users who want this feature set and do not want a deply abraded face would be better off with the Merkur Progress, or a vintage Gillette adjustable if you can get one at a reasonable price (think Super or Slim, not Fatboy!) but for most, the Progress will be the most affordable solution and that model is well made and offers a usable range of adjustment at a cheaper price than the Futur.

I feel bad rating the Futur poorly. It is well made, and I have none of the usual complaints. The head does indeed fit into the nooks and crannies of my face well enough, and I find blade replacement to be both simple and safe. I just can't see paying this much for a razor that (in my case) ends up being non-adjustable!

Progress = Merkur's adjustable for normal human male faces.

Futur = Merkur's adjustable for bristle faced Ubermensch.

Groom That Beard Perfectly With the Vikings Blade Safety Razor

It is hard to tell when exactly keeping of beards began but we know it goes as far back as the history of man. Although the double edge razor may be a recently innovated invention, shaving sticks have been in existence for over a millennium. This is rightly evident in the fact that ancient Egyptians never wore a beard.

In today's fashion culture, keeping a well groomed beard has suddenly become a trend of some sort. There's nothing as appealing like a man with a well shaved, perfectly groomed beard. The Vikings Blade offers this and much more because of its user friendly features. It is a heavyweight double edge razor which allows for more control and closure to the skin for clean, smooth shaves. The product can also be used for trimming and can make you to be your own professional barber.

The Vikings Blade also comes with a short handle that allows users to connect blade and skin more easily. The product is ideal for a cut hair cut or trims and leaves the skin cut-free, smooth, and clean.

Elkaline Double Edge One Blade Safety Razor Review - "Double edge" - yes. "Safety" - NO

I have never used a razor like this before, so when I opened the package, I wasn't quite sure about how to get the razor blade into the handle. I finally figured it out and to be honest it is VERY easy, but some instructions would have been nice. For the shave, I have mixed feelings. I am a weirdo that shaves every day. Like EVERY day. I can't sleep well if I don't shave. So, having said that, understand that I am no newbie to this. I am impressed with how smooth my legs were after using this razor, it does work well. But, there are a couple of issues...

.I know this sounds odd, but because I have never used a razor of this type before, I was (and still am) unsure of the best 'angle' to use it, so some tips or pointers regarding this could be helpful. Lastly, the biggest problem comes from the term 'safety'. That, my friend, it is not. I sliced the shiz-nit out of the back of my ankle and the bumpy part right below my knee. On both legs.

Basically, I find that it is great to use on the 'straightaways', ie, your calf and shin, but NOT on anything with any curve to it. Be careful, you will have great, smooth legs that are speckled with painful scabs :(

Edwin Jagger DE89Lbl Double Edge Safety Razor Review

As many of people who get DE safety razor I did it mostly to save money; spend $20 every other month just in cartridges always make me somewhat uncomfortable. Finally I decided to check for options, the best option for me was to get a safety razor. Doing some research I end up getting this one, apparently is a good one to learn as to keep, there are some ones that are very "forgiving" but lack the ability to do a real close shave.

I also bought a cheap kit with a boar brush, soap and bowl for 10 bucks, I really recommend to also buy a kit of sample blades. This safety razor comes with 5 derby blades which are probably the best ones or at least the ones I like the most, however everybody have different kind of skin and preferences.

My first shaves where just awfull, I got a very bad razor burns, ingrown hair I cut myself a few times. That's why I recommend to watch some videos of how to do it properly; if you are like me, a person that has used disposable razor for all your life you will finally understand all those shaving references of end up with a ton of toilet paper in the face. After watching some videos and reading some advice I end up with a list of things to have in consideration

* Preparation of razor, soap and face
* How to correctly handle the razor
* Do a proper lather
* Find the best order to razor, in my case with the grain, cross the grain and finally against the grain.
* After shaving, cold water and some good cream.

I gotta say, after my initial learning curve I must to say that I really enjoy to shave, its a complete process that I even look forward for it. Something to keep in mind is that it takes some time, I used to last 2 o 3 minutes for a fast shave with my old mach 3. Now I dedicate 10-20 minutes to get a very close and nice shave. Having this said if you are expecting to do it on rush you may end up with bloody results.

The Vikings Blade Razor vs Merkur 38HD

The Vikings Blade is a fine double edge razor that gives close, smooth shaves. It is a perfect companion for men that want to totally enjoy the shaving experience. The product comes with a lifetime warranty and made from superior materials.

The Merkur 38HD is popularly referred to as 'Barber's pole'. It is one of the finest double edge wet shaving razor available today. This two piece razor has got the strength to match any of the top products from other brands.

Design

The Vikings Blade is made from high quality materials and has a chrome plated body. This gives it a really attractive design. It comes with a butterfly head that opens easily. This makes it incredibly fast to change blades while shaving. The Merkur 38HD comes with a nickel chrome plating that makes it sparkle in the light; it is beauty personified.

Dimension

The Vikings Blade is considered average length with a length of 3.75" and comes with a body weight of 85g. It is categorized as a heavyweight double edge razor. The Merkur 38HD comes with a length of 4.5" and is categorized as a long handled razor. The product also comes with a weight of approximately 112g. It is heftier than the Vikings Blade and categorized rightly as a heavyweight razor.

Accessories

Upon purchase, the Vikings Blade comes with a travel case with a mirror and also 5 unbranded blades. The Merkur 38HD doesn't seem to come with any other accessory. You would need to buy the accessories separately.

Vikings Blade safety razor review

Got my Vikings Blade about a week ago and haven't had any issues with it. As a matter of fact, I'm so comfortable with it; I use it to shave my head sometimes. It feels easy and gentle while in use and the handle length is just ideal for me to allow as much pressure as I want to any surface of my skin. I concur with most of the reviews I have read and I would love to add that it is beautiful. Most people don't talk about the beauty and design of the product.

For me, that is the first thing I consider because to me, every accessory of mine must fit in well in my home space. The thing I loved most about buying the Vikings Blade was the shipment. Last product I bought online got missed up and the company just wouldn't take responsibility for it. I even had to pay some money to get it shipped rightly to me. So when the Vikings Blade came as expected I was really impressed. Maybe after using the product for about 6 months, I'll come back and update my review. Would the Vikings Blade be able to last for long? Only time will tell...

Merkur Heavy Duty Double Edge Razor Review

At one point, Tiger Woods (before his well-documented implosion) was arguably the greatest golfer the world had seen. And during this time, he wrote a book. Despite an ego that was larger than his trophy room, he (or his publisher) was smart enough to title it “How I play golf.” Note that he didn’t call it “How to play golf.” My point: nobody – even the greatest at what they do – has all the answers. So feel free to listen to others (including my unsolicited advice) but be your own judge. Only you can determine what it is best for you.

Here is my brief autobiographical experience into shaving with safety razors.

After much research, I followed others’ advice and purchased a Merkur 34C. And I picked up a sample pack of different blades. I was super excited to have an amazing experience, but it wasn’t a good fit for me. It didn’t ‘feel’ right and I couldn’t achieve the shave I desired. It took me a couple of months to put a finger on it, but here’s what I learned…

The 34C handle was simply too short. It felt like shaving with a little kid’s razor in my medium sized hands. As well, it made it difficult to find the Goldie Locks shaving angle. It took too aggressive of an angle and too much effort to get the results I sought. I wanted to give up, but I resisted. I eventually discovered through experimentation that I got a much better experience by slightly loosening the knob a half turn or so on my 34C – which either changed the angle of the blade or created a larger gap between it and the razor body. I’m not an engineer and can’t explain the science, but the difference was night and day. And it gave me hope, although I was concerned that I was committing a safety or shaving culture faux pas. And of course, the 34C still felt like a little kid’s toy in my hand.

So rather than give up, I decided to purchase another razor – this time the longer handled Merkur that’s also ADJUSTABLE (the Progress model #510). Bingo! I fixed both issues and couldn’t be happier.

First off, it’s amazing what the extra ¾” of an inch does. I can now hold the razor naturally and comfortably. If you don’t want an adjustable, I highly recommend you consider the 38C or whatever the longer length handle model is called. I don’t see the downside to buying a longer handle if you’re delving into DE/safety razors for the first time. It’s not like it’s twice as long or anything.

Second, consider an adjustable like the Progress. It allows you to find the correct angle for you vs. the set-in-stone static angle that the 34C has. I discovered that a middle setting of ‘3’ on the adjustable was perfect. The 34C was more like a 1 or a 2. Realize that the 34C takes away this decision for you – good or bad. For me, it was bad.

I will donate my 34C to Goodwill and enjoy my Progress for years to come. Again, my experience is anecdotal and is not to be confused with fact. If there was one and only one correct safety razor for everyone, there would not be the market options there are. And I would publish a book called “How to shave.”

A Razor with a Difference: The Vikings Blade

This would be the second time I would be reviewing a product (first didn't meet up to my expectation). So I figured if I could review something negative, I should compensate with a positive review this time around. The Vikings Blade made this possible. I am guy in his mid-30s and I usually love a clean cut (both face and head). I can't remember the last time I visited a professional barber so I pretty much do it myself.

I just used the Vikings Blade again this morning before deciding it was time I wrote a review. Unlike some products I have used in the past (don't know if it's ok to mention names), I get scared shaving my head because I don't want cuts. With the Vikings Blade, the shaving is just perfect for me. It doesn't even feel like I got blades on my skin. It's been almost 3 weeks now and I think I've gotten over the fear of shaving my head.

I'm not much into the technical stuffs so I won't even bother. TheVikings Blade is heavyweight and got really nice razor; including the 5 super sharp blades they give for free. Read somewhere they even offer a lifetime warranty for the product. Haha! Now that's just being too cocky in my opinion.

The Viking Blade Review

My son is about turning into a man, if you do know what I mean, and I decided to help him through this phase. I got him the Vikings Blade only because a trusted friend wouldn’t stop advising me to get one. Before now, I was a Gillette man to the core. I don’t think I have used any other brand outside Gillette for a very long time. I didn’t want my son to have the fear of cuts, so I decided to try out this product for myself first.

Long story short, I don’t think my son would ever experience or know how it feels to treat cuts from shaving. The Vikings Blade is indeed for Vikings. It is the perfect combination of power and perfection. It is firm to the grip and doesn’t seem susceptible to breakage. The blades are fine and sharp and I also don’t have to take care of my son’s blade changes. New blades basically do not cost a thing! You would only understand this if you have been a Gillette man yourself.

I would highly recommend the product to anyone looking to change a brand. The Vikings Blade is everything it promises and even comes with a lifetime warranty, just in case.

Viking Blade - Customer Review

When I purchased the Vikings Blade, I thought I was buying another Weishi because I have had my fair share of disappointments with that brand. The product is little longer than a normal twist to open razor and has a heavy weight feel. The handle is thick which makes it god for a firm grip. Unlike most other Weishi I have been unfortunate to use, this has a less aggressive razor. This means I do not have to worry about cuts or bumps after shaving.

A striking feature of the Vikings Blade for me has got to be its head. It was designed slightly larger than conventional double edge razor head. The blades fit in nicely and don’t stick out the sides. For me, this makes it extra safe to access areas that are hidden without worrying about sticking out blades making a cut. This is a product for every man that is seriously conscious of his looks.

Viking Blade Safety Razor Review - Customer Review

Like my dermatologist would say, I do have a tender, baby-like facial skin. While this may seem all nice and cute, it actually means I am left with cuts and bumps after every shaving experience. My dermatologist had advised I use a Gillette at one point in time but even though it gave me a good shave, the reactions was not much to be proud of. The first time I ever heard of the Vikings Blade was when I went to complain I was having frequent cuts than previously experienced.

After using the Vikings Blade for over a year now, my face free from bumps and cuts. While I am not much into the technical details of products, my research led me to know that the Vikings Blade comes with a micro-comb that prevents such cuts. The product doesn’t have a long handle like my Gillette which I believe allows for a better and closer shave.

The product comes with 5 blades and other few accessories. The product has a hefty feel to it and has one of the best butterfly heads I have ever seen. The butterfly head allows for quick blade changes during shave. The product in general seems to be made from superior materials as I have not have any issues with it since I have been using it. It was not until recently I discovered the product carries a lifetime warranty from its manufacturer. Unlike before, I shave roughly every day – if I have the time for it.
